THE SPIRIT OF MAY 19 MET ART IN THE PRINCES’ ISLANDS
A Meaningful Contribution by the Istanbul Cultures Choir on Büyükada
With its concerts and cultural activities throughout the 2025–2026 artistic season, the Istanbul Cultures Choir once again drew attention—this time through its meaningful participation in the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day celebrations in the Princes’ Islands.
Residing on Büyükada and having organized world and ethnic music concerts over the past two years at some of the Islands’ most important cultural venues—including Taş Mektep, the Adalar Museum and the Anaokulu Club—Dragos Music Association and Istanbul Cultures Choir conductor Serdar Taştanoğlu developed close collaborations with many distinguished figures contributing to the cultural life of the Islands.
Among these names was Mine Seven, instructor of the Adalar Municipality Island Dance Group. Their shared perspective on art and cultural life, combined with the complementary nature of Taştanoğlu’s choral education and Mine Seven’s dance training, gradually evolved into a strong artistic partnership. Successful collaborations during concerts in Istanbul further strengthened this bond.
A new project began approximately one month earlier upon Mine Seven’s proposal. Members of the Istanbul Cultures Choir started receiving Zeybek dance training in the association’s open-air space. The dedication and enthusiasm shown by choir members soon produced remarkable results.
Mine Seven later proposed that the dancers she trained together with the choir members take part in the May 19 events organized by Adalar Municipality. For the Istanbul Cultures Choir, this invitation represented not merely a stage performance, but also a valuable opportunity to contribute through art to this meaningful national celebration dedicated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to youth.
Proud to make even a small contribution to the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, choir members participated through both music and dance. Choristers performed marches and presented selections from their world and ethnic music repertoire aboard the ferry used for transportation between the Islands. The melodies echoing across the sea transformed the holiday spirit into a unique musical experience.
The day reached its climax with a Zeybek performance at Büyükada Clock Square, which received enthusiastic appreciation from the audience. The performance—born not of months but of only weeks of dedicated work—earned full praise from spectators.
The event was attended with great interest by Adalar Mayor Ali Ercan Akpolat, his wife, and members of the local protocol. The choir members’ stage energy, musical performances and Zeybek presentation were warmly appreciated by officials and guests alike.
The celebrations also gained an international dimension. Egyptian choir conductor Hossam Samir and accompanying artists, whose ensemble is scheduled to collaborate with the Istanbul Cultures Choir in upcoming concerts, were invited to the Islands to witness the May 19 celebrations firsthand. The visiting artists had the opportunity to observe the cultural atmosphere of the Islands and the municipality’s support for artistic activities. Meeting the mayor and local representatives, the Egyptian guests expressed their admiration and satisfaction with the hospitality and cultural solidarity they experienced.
At the end of an intensive day, fatigue was inevitable; yet what remained was a sweet exhaustion accompanied by immense pride.
For the Istanbul Cultures Choir, May 19, 2026 became more than a national celebration. It was remembered as a remarkable cultural day during which music, dance, friendship and shared values came together in the Princes’ Islands under the same spirit and enthusiasm
